This UNESCO biosphere reserve is scattered with the fascinating crumbling vestiges of Talayotic settlements dating back to 2,000 BC. The Naveta d’es Tudons, a stone-stacked burial tomb resembling an upturned boat, and the outlandish remains of the prehistoric Torre d’en Galmés village are the oldest remnants in the Balearic archipelago.

Menorca was commandeered by the Romans by 123 BC in order to ensure the safe passage of their trade vessels, and has since passed through Byzantine, Moorish, Spanish and British hands. The imposing Fort de Marlborough in Mahón was constructed when the British captured the territory in 1708, while the grand 19th-century Spanish architecture lining Cuitadella’s main plaza is more typical of the island’s historic urban areas.

A variety of traditional festivals are hosted throughout the year, often incorporating medieval mock battles, prancing horses, firework displays and lively folk dancing in and around the town squares. Don’t miss the most famous fiesta, Sant Joan, celebrated every summer by convivial locals and crowds of visitors in Ciutadella.

Menorca enjoys scorching summers and the busiest months to visit are July and August. Spring is a particularly pleasant season, when the almond trees are in full bloom and temperatures are mild. The easternmost isle in the Balearic chain moves at its own tempo year-round and generally tends to be quieter than its larger siblings.

Many choose to start their travels in capital Mahón. Set around what’s rumoured to be the second biggest natural harbour in the world, the colourful city is home to a diverse range of cultural offerings. From sampling regionally produced gin at the Mercado del Claustro del Cármen, a bustling market tucked in the cloisters of a honey-coloured church, to shopping for handmade sandals made from butter-soft leather, there’s something here to suit all tastes.

The sun-drenched resorts peppering Punta Prima and Son Bou are a big hit with families, and can be reached with an easy half-hour drive from Mahón. Alternatively, the protected wetlands of Parc Natural de s’Albufera des Grau are a mere 15 minutes away in your hire car and make for scenic hiking and cycling routes.
